Title: Fangirl
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Series: No.
Age Range: I would say 16 and up.
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Coming of Age
Would I recommend it to anyone: HELL YES.
Description on Goodreads:
From the author of the New York Times bestseller Eleanor & Park.
A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.
Cath is a Simon Snow fan.
Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .
But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.
Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.
Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.
Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.
For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?
Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?
And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?
Review:
Holy shit balls.
HOLY SHIT BALLS.
If you have not heard of this book, you are about too!
As it said in the Goodreads blurb, Cath is pretttyyy much your typical Fangirl… What with the fanfiction, the slash (paring up characters un canon) and 9 times out of ten being an introvert.
She did NOT want to be separated from her sister, the only person in the world who understood her love of the world of Harry Potter Simon Snow! HOW COULD SHE JUST LEAVE HER TO GET A ROOMATE SHE DOESN’T KNOW?!
This book is almost like a diagram of how I would and DO react in most situations!
I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I must say that this book took me my surprise. Ever since Lola and the Boy Next Door (Review upcoming), I have been on a HUGE contemporary kick, and this just fed my addiction.
More than the Harry Potterkids can understand the feelings of a fangirl. Those needs, those emotions. How you clutch your books right and cry when [Insert Character] died/was injured/got kicked into nothingness basically. How you squealed and danced when something good happened! When the couple has their first kiss/hug/awkward realization that… Hey. I like this person. OH FUCK.
This book… this is a must in every fan girl, boys, undecideds bookshelf in my opinion.
As this was my first (and DEFINETELY NOT LAST) Rainbow Rowell book, I must tip my hat to this wonderful lady.
You made a fangirl of you, the worlds you created.. and I hope to CROWLEY you make the Simon Snow series a reality.
Also.
